UAE Customs Duty Calculator | Import VAT Estimate Skip to main content

Do not assume every UAE import is automatically charged 10.25%

The common 5% duty rate is only a starting scenario. Dubai’s AED 300 personal e-commerce duty exemption has eligibility conditions and expressly excludes tobacco, nicotine/e-smoking goods, alcoholic beverages and foods containing alcohol. VAT and carrier charges are separate.

Default: AED 3.6725 per USD. Change it only when you have a different clearance or customs conversion rate.

Uses the selected customs-duty rate without automatically applying an emirate-specific low-value exemption.

The AED 300 duty exemption is applied only when this confirmation is checked and the estimated customs value is AED 300 or less.

The tool cannot determine an HS code, origin preference or legal exemption. Use 0% or a custom rate only when you have confirmed it.

Optional confirmed government or customs fees included in the simplified VAT base.

Optional carrier charge shown separately from duty and VAT.

Enter only import duties or taxes already collected, not the item price or shipping.

Key UAE Import Rules Used by This Estimator

The calculator separates the common standard-rate scenario from the Dubai low-value personal e-commerce duty exemption.

5%
Common standard customs duty
The UAE Government publishes a general 5% customs-duty rate on customs value including cost, freight and insurance, subject to tariff classification and exceptions.
5%
Standard import VAT rate
The current UAE VAT Decree-Law applies a 5% standard rate to taxable imports. Import value follows customs legislation and includes freight, insurance, customs fees and excise tax where applicable.
≤300
Dubai personal e-commerce duty rule
Dubai Customs Notice 9/2021 exempts qualifying personal goods not exceeding AED 300 from customs duty through postal parcels, couriers and companies; Notice 14/2021 applied Article 5(a) from 1 January 2022.
Excluded
Tobacco, nicotine and alcohol
The Dubai low-value customs-duty exemption does not cover tobacco or derivatives, electronic smoking devices and tools, nicotine liquids, alcoholic beverages or foods containing alcohol.
Fees
Carrier charges are separate
Courier, administration and clearance charges vary by carrier and are not a universal customs-duty or VAT rate.
FX
USD conversion is an estimate
The default USD rate is editable. Customs or tax valuation may use the applicable official rate at the relevant date, so the final AED assessment can differ.

How to Read Import Terms at Checkout

Do not assume a retailer always uses the same customs arrangement for every order

Duties & Taxes Included

Prepaid

If checkout explicitly says duties and import taxes are included or prepaid, record the import-charge amount in the calculator's “Already Collected” field.

Check whether the charge is final or only an estimated deposit.

Duties Not Included

Pay Later

If checkout says duties or taxes are not included, the courier or postal operator may request payment during clearance or before delivery.

Ask the carrier about administration and clearance fees too.

UAE Domestic Fulfilment

Usually Local Sale

A product already sold and fulfilled domestically is generally not a personal import by the shopper, but marketplace sellers can still ship cross-border.

Check the seller and “ships from” information, not only the website name.

Marketplace Orders

Seller-Specific

Different sellers on the same marketplace can use different origins, carriers and import terms. Review the exact listing and checkout summary.

One marketplace does not always equal one customs treatment.

Returns & Re-imports

Keep Records

Keep invoices and customs-payment evidence. Dubai's e-commerce notice includes a specific rule for qualifying returned personal goods where duty was previously proven to have been paid.

Documentation matters when claiming relief or resolving duplicate charges.

High-Value or Unusual Goods

Verify First

For restricted goods, unusual tariff classifications, commercial quantities or high-value shipments, use the relevant customs authority or a licensed clearance provider instead of a generic calculator.

This tool is designed for ordinary personal online-shopping estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tool uses item price, shipping and insurance as a simplified customs-value estimate. It applies the selected duty rate, then estimates 5% import VAT on the customs value plus estimated duty and any customs or import fees entered. Courier charges are shown separately.

No. Five per cent is a common standard rate, but tariff classification, origin, exemptions and customs procedures can change the result. Use the custom or confirmed-exempt option only when you have verified it.

Dubai Customs Notice 9/2021 excludes tobacco and its derivatives, electronic smoking devices and tools, nicotine liquids, alcoholic beverages and foods containing alcohol from the customs-duty exemption.

The cited notice expressly exempts qualifying goods from customs duty. It does not state a general VAT exemption, so this calculator continues to estimate 5% import VAT unless another VAT treatment has been confirmed.

The authority or carrier may use a different customs value, HS classification, origin treatment, exchange rate, customs fee or courier charge. Restricted goods and commercial quantities can also require different procedures.

Enter only the duties or import taxes collected at checkout. The calculator subtracts that amount when estimating what may remain payable, but it does not assume that an excess deposit will be refunded.

Important: This calculator is an educational estimate for ordinary personal online-shopping imports. It does not determine an HS code, legal exemption, restricted-goods requirement, customs value, official exchange rate or final carrier charge. The Dubai AED 300 scenario is applied only after the user confirms the stated eligibility conditions. Verify material purchases with the relevant customs authority, courier or qualified adviser.
